– Infectious diseases (including tropical and neglected infectious diseases and emerging infections)

Open positions and desired qualifications:

Research Associate

• Master in clinical medicine, global health, or public health, with good medical and scientific English
• at least 2 years of work experience in the related field
• good SCI publication record
• ability to work with minimal supervision, design and perform independent research projects
• ability to publish scientific papers in English

Research Assistant

• Bachelor in clinical medicine, epidemiology, or public health, with good medical and scientific English
• strong interest in research (with proven evidence of research experience)
• strong motivation to learn and adhere to scientific integrity
• ability to design and perform supervised research projects
• strong motivation to publish scientific papers in English

Appointment term: Yearly extendable contract

So far, SUMS has obtained the authorization of 3 doctoral programs of the first-level disciplines, 1 doctoral programs of the second-level disciplines, 5 master’s programs of the first-level disciplines and 4 professional degrees, together with 3 post-doctoral research stations. Besides, it has 1 national key discipline and 4 provincial key disciplines, while clinical medicine of SUMS has even become the top 1% of ESI in the world.

SUMC has five affiliated hospitals (the First Affiliated Hospital of SUMH, the Second Affiliated Hospital of SUMH, Shantou University Mental Health Center, Cancer Hospital of SUMH, STU/CUHK Joint Shantou International Eye Center), 1 dental clinic and 3 clinical colleges (Shenzhen Children’s Hospital Clinical College, Luohu Clinical College, and Yuebei Clinical College). Among them, the First Affiliated Hospital of SUMH was selected as one of the first key units of the “Summit Plan” for the construction of high-level hospitals in Guangdong Province. Now, it is one of the first national standardized training bases for resident doctors in China, and the national clinical training base for general practitioners (in East Guangdong). There are also 2 directly associated partner hospitals, 4 non-directly associated partner hospitals and 18 teaching hospitals.

SUMC pays great attention to international cooperation. Particularly after 2009, we have cooperated with the University of Alberta (Canada), the University of Groningen (the Netherlands), the University of Sassari (Italy), Edith Cowan University (Australia), and Chiang Mai University (Thailand). We have established cooperation and exchanges with more than 70 colleges/ universities and scientific research institutions in 16 countries and regions.

In SUMC, there are 4 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, 2 key laboratories of the Provincial Health Department, 2 provincial key laboratories of colleges and universities, 1 International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of Guangdong Province, and 3 international scientific and technological cooperation and innovation platforms for universities in Guangdong. In 2019, SUMC launched a construction project of scientific research center to promote the discipline development and enhance the teaching and research level comprehensively. Donated by the Li Ka-shing Foundation with a total investment of 500 million yuan, the project is expected to be completed and put to use before the end of 2021. Serving as an important work platform for SUMC’s discipline construction and talent cultivation, the new research center will lay a solid foundation for promoting the integration of multiple disciplines and achieving leapfrog development.

Due to the needs of SUMC’s development, we are recruiting professional and technical personnel on a long-time basis. The announcement for qualified candidates is as follows:

Position 1: Teaching and research talents

1. Recruiting position

Teaching and research talents in preclinical medicine, pharmacy, biology, public health, nursing, chemistry and other related fields.

2. Requirements

1). Passion and dedication to work, with professional ethics as a good teacher and teamwork awareness as an effective team member;

2). Doctorate degree from a well-known university at home and abroad;

3). Academic strengths in teaching and research (those with teaching experience or overseas study experience are preferred);

4). Good health and availability to work full-time.

3. Remuneration

1). The corresponding remuneration and benefits will be provided for the technical positions according to the teaching/educational levels.

(1) The annual income of specially-appointed professors is 580,000 yuan or more (including provincial and municipal funding), and the research funding for start-up is 1-1.5 million yuan;

(2) The annual income of senior positions is over 470,000 yuan (including provincial and municipal funding), and the research funding for start-up is 500,000 yuan;

(3) The annual income of associate senior position is 360,000 yuan or more (including provincial and municipal funding), and the research funding for start-up is 400,000 yuan;

(4) The annual income of intermediate positions is 320,000 yuan or more (including provincial and municipal funding), and the research funding for start-up is 150,000-300,000 yuan.

Note: The above remuneration is only applicable to newly introduced teachers who meet the requirements.

2). The corresponding settlement and rental allowance, one-time housing subsidy and living subsidy will be provided according to the technical position of the employed talents.

3). The provincial financial support for SUMC’s introduction of talents is as follows: a living allowance of 200,000 yuan for each doctor under the age of 40; a living allowance of 300,000 yuan for each postdoc under the age of 45;

4. Relevant research services will be provided to high-level talents officially recognized by Shantou government;

5. Candidates with excellent qualifications will be preferentially recommended to apply for various talent funding projects in Guangdong Province.

1). Passion and dedication to work, with professional ethics as a researcher and teamwork awareness as an effective team member;

2). Generally under 35 years old;

3). Doctorate degree generally received no more than three years;

4). Good health and availability to work full-time.

3. Benefits

1). Annual postdoctoral income before tax starting from 350,000 Yuan up to 820,000 Yuan during the 2 years in the research station;

2). Housing or rental allowance in SUMC up to 30,000 yuan per year;

3). Research funding for start-up up to 200,000 yuan;

4). Enjoying the convenient channel and other favorable policies of the medical school system for applying technical titles;

5). Postdocs engaged in clinical research in various affiliated hospitals can also receive standardized training for resident doctors or for specialists during the stay at the station;
